Decluttering is an important part of a successful spring cleaning. Throwing out stuff you no longer need is an excellent way to start. It reduces clutter which means less stuff to clean and reorganize. With the changing of the season, it’s the perfect time to rid of old, worn, and unused items. Once you gather these items, decide what things you want to donate, sell or toss.
- Bedrooms: go through closets to find outfits, shoes, jewelry, and other accessories that are duplicates or that were never worn in the past 6 months. Go through dresser drawers and throw out any socks with holes or missing pairs and underwear and bras that are worn and stretched. In addition, check under the bed and on nightstands for any misplaced items or garbage that may have accumulated.
- Kitchen: throw out any food that has expired or gone bad such as those leftovers, fruits, and veggies that were pushed to the back of the fridge and pantry. Get rid of any food items that no one likes and eliminate foods and condiments you don’t use. Also, throw away pots, pans, utensils, and Tupperware that are never used or broken.
- Bathrooms: toss all the toiletries that you no longer use, are empty or leaking. Combine partially used items that you want to keep. Give away items that you never used such as lotions and soaps. Be sure to look through the medicine cabinet to throw out any expired prescriptions or ones you no longer need.
- Drawers: empty office and multiple purpose drawers to get rid of old mail, paper, receipts, and supplies and toss any junk, broken items, or doo-dads.
- Shelves and Cabinets: look for old books, toys, electronics, games, DVDs, CDs, and purge items you don’t anticipate using again.
After decluttering your home, you will see progress made, gain confidence and feel less overwhelmed with the tasks that lie ahead.
