It may feel like you have tried every commercial drain cleaner on the supermarket shelf to unclog your bathtub or shower drain. The media has led us to believe that the only products or methods to open up your drains are harsh and powerful chemicals that leave you running out of your bathroom with your nose plugged. Not only can these chemicals be harmful to you but they can corrode, strip and rust the metal of your pipes, leaving them weaker and more susceptible to cracks and leaks.

Environmentally Friendly Drain Cleaner

If the ease of unclogging your drain by pouring a solution down it is appealing to you, try a home recipe of things you have in your cabinet. Most people recommend pouring 1 cup of baking soda down your drain and following that with 1 cup of vinegar. Just like in your school days volcano science project the baking soda and vinegar will react and bubble. Plug or cover the drain for about 20 minutes until the bubbles have died down and then flush the drain with boiling water. This is a very easy and environmentally friendly way to clear your drain and can be repeated multiple times if it doesn’t fully work the first.

There is another very safe and even edible product called Bio-Clean that is perfect for eating away at stubborn clogs. Bio-Clean is a safe and natural bacteria that clings on to hair, grease, and buildups in your drain and eats away at them. Unlike liquid cleaners, Bio-Clean doesn’t run down your drain and clear only what it touches for a few seconds, it sits and eats until the material is gone. We highly recommend this product for keeping your drain clean. Ask your plumber for some next time we are at your home about purchasing a bottle of Bio-Clean, we guarantee you won’t go back to anything else.

Physically Clean Drains

If you just aren’t having luck with the above method, you can always try removing the stopper and physically pulling the clog out. Since most of the time the clog lies just a few inches under the stopper this can be a very effective way of unclogging your drain. The most complicated part is figuring out how to remove your stopper, and that is pretty easy. Once you have the stopper removed, find something easy to hold on to that can pull the clog out. We recommend a stiff wire or part of a hanger. Once you pull the clog out flush your drain with hot water and reassemble the stopper.

If nothing seems to be working and your drain is still slow-moving, you may have a drain clog that is deeper in your drain or a problem with your main sewer line.
