Question:

Dear Any Hour Services, Electrical, Plumbing, Heating & Air,

When I flush the toilet, my drain starts gurgling. The same thing happens when I run the washer. Are my drains trying to tell me something?

– Melinda R.

Answer:

Your drains are speaking to you, but it’s more of a cry for help. Picture this:

from your house to the main drain, there’s something like ** feet of pipe that can hold upwards of 60 gallons of water. You might think that just because you’re flushing your toilet and things are going down your drain is clear. But there could be a blockage holding tens of gallons back that drains slowly, making your other drains in the house send out a collective gurgle for help.

Here’s another way of looking at it. Do you know how a bathtub or sink might start draining slowly? The water eventually goes down, but you know there’s something in the pipe slowing things up. The same thing can happen with your main line. I would recommend having a drain technician (not a plumber!) come check things out before your drain goes insane. The sooner you get it taken care of, the more options you have for getting it fixed. (And it’s less likely you’ll have a full backup or failure in the future!)
