We rarely take the time to think about the air conditioner that’s cooling our home or office. Rather, we take it for granted, like the internet or phone service. But air conditioning is one of the most important innovations of the twentieth century. Skeptical? Here are four interesting AC facts to prove it:
- Willis Carrier invented the first modern air conditioner in 1902 for a Brooklyn publishing company. The conditioner kept the temperature and humidity low to prevent the paper from expanding and contracting. Carrier never envisioned his invention as being used for comfort or on a massive scale.
- Movie theaters were some of the first businesses to use air conditioners in the thralls of the Great Depression. It helped business during the summer, as people would head to the movies to cool off from the sweltering heat. Studios began releasing their biggest and best productions during the hot summer months when crowds were high, giving birth to the modern summer blockbuster.
- Before AC, both industry and government slowed down or even stopped during the summer. Some historians say that federal bureaucracy is a result of air-conditioning since it allowed lawmakers to stay in session longer.
- Modern houses are far less bearable without AC than homes were in the days before the invention of air conditioning. Since AC was invented, we’ve stopped using ventilation and heat-defeating features such as sleeping porches, strategically placed shrubbery, transoms, and breezeways, so without AC, it can get pretty toasty inside doors.
