DIY Tips for Unclogging Your Bathroom Sink
Many bathroom sinks have a small metal stopper in the drain that is meant to prevent large particles of soap, hair, or other debris from going down the drain. Often, this debris is caught in the metal stopper and can cause your bathroom sink to drain slowly. Unscrew the stopper and remove any debris.
If the stopper is not the problem, the clog may be located deeper in the drain. If you have a drain snake on hand, get it out and give your drain a quick snake to remove any blockages. No snake? Try a wire hanger! Simply bend it so you can fit it into your sink while holding it firmly to the other end. You should be able to pull up any hair or other mess clogging your drain with this method.
Can’t reach the clog with your snake or wire hanger? Grab your sink plunger (do not use the toilet plunger) and place it over the drain. Fill the sink with enough water to just cover the plunger and rapidly move it up and down, creating a suction force over the drain. Plunging should dislodge the blockage and your drain will flow freely. But be careful! Putting too much pressure into the drain might cause something under the sink to become disconnected and leak water into the cabinet.
If none of the above are working, your issue may be related to a dirty drain with built-up grime instead of the main blockage. You can try to dissolve this grime with baking soda and vinegar. First, pour half a cup of baking soda and half a cup of vinegar into the drain and let it sit for ten to 15 minutes – this should dissolve any minor buildup. Then pour boiling water down the drain to clear the sludge away. Be aware that if your drains are particularly old, you may need professional drain cleaning or hydro jetting.
Bathroom sink clogs are more often than not caused by a ring, necklace, small plastic toy, or other foreign objects that have fallen down the drain. If you have a stubborn clog, this could be the cause. Check the P-Trap, or U-shaped bend in the pipe under your sink, for any foreign object that could have gotten caught there. Make sure to turn off the water before removing the pipe.
